My family moved to Baltimore from Hilo, HI 18 years ago and I’ve never been able to stray too far from what I now consider my home city. I went to The Park School from 2nd grade all the way through high school, and when it came time to pick a college, I knew it had to at least be in Maryland. I settled on St. John’s College in Annapolis, where I graduated during the height of the pandemic in 2020. A year later I found myself working remotely for academy-nominated film director Nathaniel Kahn. I was getting ready to go to grad school for IT when I noticed my local liquor store, Wells, was hiring part-time cashiers. I figured there was nothing wrong with making a little extra money on the side working somewhere that was only three minutes from my house, and wine had always been my drink of choice, so in November of 2021 I joined the crew. I would frequently find myself talking shop with Lee or Jeff on slow days, occasionally being called back to try a delicious bottle when the occasion permitted it. This process continued for quite some time, and I began to realize how much I enjoyed discussing customers’ purchases with them, helping someone find the perfect bottle of wine for their occasion, or even just looking through our massive inventory to discover wines I had never heard of from countries I didn’t even know could grow grapes. I had found where I wanted to be, and in January of 2022, I abandoned my (probably quite lucrative) plans to attend grad school and began working at Wells full time. My obsession with wine and its ability to condense culture, history, geography, science, art, and nature into a tangible and delicious product became stronger than it had ever been. I read everything I could about wine, I watched interviews with masters of wine on their methods of evaluation, I held tastings with my friends, and slowly I found myself becoming the person my family and friends came to for wine recommendations. This love of wine, coupled with the joy I get from discussing it with friendly people every day at Wells, eventually landed me where I am now: a floor manager and wine associate in training.
While my knowledge base is still growing, my enthusiasm for wine is endless, and there’s nothing better than using such a renewable resource to help someone find exactly what they’re looking for.
